Happy Birthday, Facebook

Today is Facebook's 6th birthday, and to celebrate, the social networking site has overhauled it's homepage. According to the post at Mashable, more than 80 million users will have the update live by tonight.

Of course, mine's not updated yet, or I'd share a screenshot with you. If you're interested, Mashable and Matthew Sander's Preposterous have some pictures. Here's some of the features Mashable says you can expect when your page is updated:

1) Notifications will be located on thetop left
2) Your pic and status will be on the homepage
3) The ability to see your inbox from the homepage

Also, expect the design to place a much larger emphasis on real-time search - Facebook's attempt to compete with Twitter's latest updates.

I'll be interested to see how Facebook users react to the changes over the week. Occasionally, I still see people joining the "Bring the old Facebook Back" groups." However, on my end, I've enjoyed MOST of the Facebook's improvements - except for those regarded to my privacy.

Although to some extent, I do feel like perhaps I have a little more control, the privacy changes were likely a strategy to tempt users to share more content for the upcoming real-time searches. With that mind, it leaves me feeling a little uneasy... Of course, if you follow the nothing you post on the Internet is private rule like I do, you shouldn't have any problems :)

Happy Birthday, Facebook!

Melanie's Monday Mashup - Google Breaking News

Last week it was Twitter... This week, it's Google. For those of us who geek out on SEO, the search Goliath has stolen the limelight from Tiger, Twitter, TARP and tea parties, with these three big breaking announcements.

#1 Google Goggles – Just as I thought the Google app with voice search for my iPhone was the bomb, Google one-upped it with a new visual search application for Andriod devices. Need information about the business across the street? Or want information about the book the guy next to you at the airport is reading? Do you like the purse the girl at the next table is carrying?

No need to ask … Just snap a picture, and Google will send you the information.

#2 Google Real Time Search – Spending two hours a day commuting makes you appreciate devices like GPS, as well as the radio and cell phone - all of which can help you navigate through traffic more efficiently.

Those real-time updates, whether it’s the traffic on I-95 or reactions to the President’s State of the Union address, is something Google’s lacked. Now, however, you can find out what people are saying about your favorite sports team, traffic and anything else in real time. Google Real Time Search gives us the ability to see what is happening in our neighborhoods, and what people are talking about, as it’s happening.

Learn more about it by watching the Google Real Time Search Video.

#3 Google Personalized Search
– While personalized search is nothing new, personalizing the results for you, me and all the other Googlers is...

Yes, that's right. On Friday Google announced it's personalizing everyone's search results by tracking everything you’ve searched for over 180 days, and using it to customize your results. And according to Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineLand.com, this shift is "the biggest change that has ever happened in search engines."

And while this will make determining ranking virtually impossible, it doesn't mean death for SEO or Internet marketing. You'll still need a solid strategy to get your site in the top results .

Read more and watch the video at Google, and then use your computer to click on your own site until it ranks #1!

Interesting Facebook News This Week

This week, a bunch of Facebook news has made the rounds. Just incase you're not aware, here is what the buzz is regarding Facebook.

Facebook acquired Friendfeed which will only make for a better Facebook feed in the future. Since Friendfeed is mainly a site where users can share all their social media profiles in one place, I'm sure its team up with Facebook can only mean bigger and better things.

Facebook has decided to launch Facebook Lite, which is a lighter version of Facebook, which has been said that it kind of looks like a Facebook version of a Twitter stream. From what I've seen, Facebook lite reminds me of an interface that is more mobile friendly, but right now, its being tested on a limited amount of users.

Facebook launches a real time search feature on their website. This new search function even comes up with results from the web, powered by Bing. Now you can search for a company, and view web results outside of Facebook, as well as within Facebook. It was also mentioned that status updates will have the ability to be found publicly and not just if a user is signed into Facebook, which I found to be interesting. This would mean that Facebook search would be in competition with Twitter search.
