Facebook IPO Makes History

Photograph: Paul Sakuma/AP
It’s a big day for Mark Zuckerberg and friends. Just a few minutes ago, the inventor and head of the world’s most popular social network rang the opening bell for the Nasdaq in anticipation of Facebook’s initial public offering (IPO) that will make him and a handful of people under the age of 50 millionaires or even billionaires. Shares are expected to begin trading around 11am Eastern Time at $38 per share.
This is also an exciting day for the tech industry in general as this is the largest Internet IPO ever (and the 3rdlargest IPO in U.S. history) and it certainly legitimizes the rise of social media. Despite all the hoopla, some analysts are warning against jumping into Facebook right away. Some warn to stay away from the stock for at least 6 months and some say to wait even longer.
One thing is for sure: the IPO puts a lot of pressure on the social media giant to monetize its 900 million users worldwide and maintain its place at the head of the class. Only time will tell if Facebook outpaces predecessors like Google and Apple or if it will become another sideshow attraction like Yahoo!.
Are you planning to invest in Facebook’s IPO? We want to hear from you in the comments section.

Facebook: Largest Internet IPO in History or Fad?

This month, Facebook filed for an IPO and is expected to start trading in May. The company is valued at somewhere between $75 billion and $100 billion, making it the largest Internet IPO ever, much more than Google's $23 billion initial market capitalization.

Is this a smart move for investors or does Facebook live in its own bubble, just waiting for it to burst? The innovative company and its fearless leader, Mark Zuckerberg, will undoubtedly have to continue its track record of dominating the Internet space for a long time to come. With today's fickle Internet users and a new generation of "digital natives" being brought up, this will not be an easy feat.

There are many ways that Facebook can grow and various markets it can enter, but it only takes one new startup to knock you off the throne... just ask MySpace.

Do you think Facebook has what it takes to stay on top? Would you invest in the IPO?

The Time 100 of 2011: Most Influential Technologists

The Time 100 of 2011 was released today which includes a mix of the most influential people in the world. This list consists of artists, activists, reformers, researchers, heads of state, captains of industry and technologists.

Some of the featured technologists include:

1. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Founder
2. Larry Page, Google CEO
3. Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO
4. Peter Vesterbacka, Angry Birds Game Developer
5. Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post Co-Founder
6. Charles Chao, Sina Weibo CEO (China’s Twitter)

I’m sure a few of these names do not come as a surprise (i.e. Mark Zuckerberg). But with the technology industry growing in leaps and bounds, there has to be a few key influencers missing from the list. One name that comes to mind for me is Pete Cashmore, Mashable Founder and CEO. He didn’t make it on this year’s list although he was included in 2010’s.

Who has significantly propelled the technology field that you feel is missing from the list? Or do you feel the list is accurately portrayed?

A Movie About Facebook In Talks...

Facebook has come a long way from what it was back when it was only for college students. The popular social network has reach more than 200 million users and you know a social network is huge when you even find your parents signing up for a Facebook profile!

It is so big, that a movie based on the social network is in advanced talks with Columbia Pictures with director David Fincher, who directed popular movies, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club and The Game. The movie will tell the story of Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg as he created the social network from his Harvard dormroom to the popular network it is today.

I'm sure that this will be a highly anticipated film, as many Facebook users can relate to many things Facebook features such as poking, wall messages and 'liking' people's status messages. And of course, we all are probably wondering when a Twitter movie will be in the works!
