Using "Facebook Candy" to Increase Engagement

Engagement seems to be a buzzword among social media marketers who are trying to get the most interaction from fans to increase their brand visibility online. So how do you get fans to share, like and comment on your posts? Let’s focus on Facebook since this is still by far the largest social network, but realize that this can be applied across all social media sites.
One way to spark engagement is by using what we like to call “Facebook Candy” – visual images like photos and videos stand out in a users’ feed and makes them more likely to interact with your post. You can add a single photo or upload a group of photos at once into a photo album. Both are eye-catching in your fans’ newsfeeds, but clicking on a photo album requires the user to leave their newsfeed, so single photos are sometimes more effective. Types of photos you may want to post include product photos, event photos, behind-the-scenes photos and memes. Remember to add a brief comment or question with each post to help jump start the conversation.
Posting relevant videos that are humorous, educational or awe-inspiring can also generate a lot of engagement. Don’t be afraid to go out and create your own videos. Use the title and description to help make the video stand out and always include a call to action. Creating engaged users means you’re building a devoted fan base that will help spread the word about your brand or product. That’s why it’s important to craft posts that grab attention in this media-saturated world. You can raise your brand awareness and build lifelong customers by creating more effective posts with images and video.

"We The Users" A Social Network User's Bill of Rights

Most of us belong to at least one social network: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Foursquare, etc. Recently, some of us have become a little irked with the social networks we use, namely Facebook's privacy issues.

This is why a number of social network users met in San Jose, CA for the annual Computers, Freedom and Privacy (CFP) Conference to discuss the creation of a Social Network User's Bill of Rights. You can follow what people are saying about the Bill on Twitter (#BillOfRights).

The document begins "We the Users..." and outlines what users have come to expect from social networks. The hot topics include honesty, transparency, privacy, disclosure and control. You can voice your opinion of the bill by voting on the Act.ly petition here.

A Movie About Facebook In Talks...

Facebook has come a long way from what it was back when it was only for college students. The popular social network has reach more than 200 million users and you know a social network is huge when you even find your parents signing up for a Facebook profile!

It is so big, that a movie based on the social network is in advanced talks with Columbia Pictures with director David Fincher, who directed popular movies, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club and The Game. The movie will tell the story of Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg as he created the social network from his Harvard dormroom to the popular network it is today.

I'm sure that this will be a highly anticipated film, as many Facebook users can relate to many things Facebook features such as poking, wall messages and 'liking' people's status messages. And of course, we all are probably wondering when a Twitter movie will be in the works!

Twitter vs. Facebook

With the recent increase in the popularity of Twitter and with everyone from Barack Obama to Britney Spears signing up, it leads us to question how popular Twitter actually is.

20% of Twitter users have joined in the last 60 days and Twitter is expected to double its members within a year. However, just how far does Twitter lag behind Facebook in popularity?

The media mentions Facebook about 4 times as often as Twitter, but Facebook is over 30 times bigger than Twitter and it is growing much faster.
Twitter has 4-5 million users with 5-10 thousand new accounts opening per day. This seems huge, but the reality is that 30% of Twitter's 5 million users have unengaged accounts.
Compare this to Facebook's 140 million active users and 600,000 daily registrants. It seems clear that Twitter is a huge phenomenon, but that Facebook has already broken into the mainstream.

If Facebook stopped growing today and Twitter was allowed to play catch-up, it would take 36 years for Twitter to reach Facebook's current numbers. Conversely, Facebook "grows a Twitter's worth" every 8 days!

In order for Twitter to break into the mainstream its members need to start using the social network more. 38% of Twitter's members have no picture, 22% of members have under 5 followers and 9% aren't following anyone.

These numbers were taken from a HubSpot report on Twitter's status at the end of 2008 and from new facebook user numbers.
